Flos Japan has officially celebrated the launch of Gaku and Sawaru, the new lights created for the Flos Home Collection by internationally acclaimed designer Oki Sato -Chief Designer and founder of Studio nendo. For this long awaited debut, a special curated exhibition and a cocktail party have been organized at the new Kashiyama Daikanyama complex in Tokyo. The prestigious six-story retail space and gallery that brings together Fashion, Food, Design and Art, also designed by nendo and unveiled earlier this year, has been a perfect venue to showcase nendo's poetic and minimalist creations for the Italian lighting brand.
Gaku, meaning ‘frame’ in Japanese, is conceived as something in between accessories and furniture. It is a frame that hosts and interacts with wire or wireless lamps and a variety of matching objects, also featuring an inductive charging dock. Accessories include bowls, vases, a mirror and a bookend, held firmly in place by magnets onto a minimal contact area. An assortment of accessory-like lighting and light-like accessories, easy to be combined, as if casually rearranging the interiors of a miniature room.
Sawaru is a light consisting of two independent cylinders touching each other in a perpendicular direction. One hosts the light source, while the other plays the role of a base, allowing adjustment of the projection angle into three stages. A clear example of nendo’s design philosophy of doing away with excess elements and creating a simple form while obtaining various functions.
The event has been very successful, with a highly selected attendance of editors, clients and interior-design experts. Oki Sato personally introduced his designs to the Japanese media during an interview session and a photo shooting.
